Craig LeHoullier noticed one year that one of his Cherokee Purple plants had much darker fruits than the others. He grew out the seeds the following year and they produced the same dark coloured fruit which was the result of a spontaneous mutation. The rich, sweet, smooth taste of Cherokee Chocolate is similar to Cherokee Purple with oblate fruits.
